Creative inclusion: Scotland/Macedonia
The role of culture and creativity in the changing lives of young Romany and Gypsy/Travelers
Through this collaboration Macedonian artist Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva and Scottish cultural researcher Dr Fiona Dean, aim to bring their different skills and shared interests in the role of art and artists in supporting new means of cultural engagement to explore how ideas of culture, tradition, social change and inclusion might be developed with minority groups through art as supported by greater European understanding.
Through this project we aim to share ideas and discuss potential for working connections, between artists, art educators, cultural researchers and organisations in Scotland and Macedonia, specifically in terms of exploring:
1. how the arts are impacting on the cultural and educational experiences of young Roma people.
2. how this compares with and might link to work being developed in Scotland with Scottish Gypsy/Travellers.
3. the potential for future international cooperation, partnership and working connections between the two countries via The Public Room, and National Roma Centrum and key contacts in the arts and education in Scotland.
The focus of the visit would be on creating contacts with Roma communities in Macedonia in order to learn and exchange ideas on how cultural traditions in particular arts and crafts are viewed, by young people. We are specifically concerned to explore in what forms these traditions and cultures of Gypsy/Traveller and Romany communities are rendered visible and discuss how these might be re-presented through art. On return we aim to share, develop and feedback learning and contacts with partners in Scotland.
