Istanbul - Popular Culture Journalism Workshop

The ECF and the Turkish popular culture magazine Bant organised a workshop on European popular culture media. The event brought together 40 popular culture journalists from 20 countries and upwards of 30 Turkish journalists and culture professionals. The workshop was covered extensively in the Turkish media and has led to practical collaborations such as article exchanges and joint publications. The next meeting will be held in Casablanca in summer 2007.

The workshop, which was held in the Topkapi Palace, focused on a number of issues, including street art in Europe, coverage of foreign cultures, and music censorship. Fatih Akin's new documentary on Istanbul's music scene, ‘Crossing the Bridge', was screened during the event, followed by a Q&A session with the film's protagonist, German bass-player Alexander Hacke. The ECF and Bant also organised a sold-out concert in which Hacke played with the Turkish band Baba Zula.
