what do you have to do if you want to participate?
apply with just few lines about yourself and your place to mcw@wowm.org
and you will get more info and directions what to do!
and there is not much to do, just to answer few questions and get to know new friends, artists who live all accross Europe.
remember to send this call to any of your friends artists for whom you know that they are living in such a small city!
The starting place for this project is small Croatian place Ludbreg.
But have you ever heard of Ludbreg? No? We thought so!
Imagine all those small places out there, with all the significant historical and contemporary characteristics for whom, outside their reach, no one ever heard of!? This project that we are making, would like to shed some light on them, enabling the artists and artist’s organizations involved to connect and start genuine cross-borders collaborations with like-minded partners.
What gets us excited is finding ways to create and use technology as a tool to strengthen connections between people and to places. By leading an online life we attain a global sense of connection to distant people and remote locations. Ubiquitos technology helps us keep in touch with each other, and in many ways also with ourselves. Yet digital methods of representing a person or a place are a far cry from the corporeal experience – good when representing an efficient, asynchronous connection, but not as useful when supporting a more authentic, deeper conversation.
Can like-mindedness be felt over a distance? How do we use technology for more meaningful interactions? There exist a zone of balance, which we find fascinating. A place where the interaction is not burdensome and not too brief. Where it actually takes some thought and effort to reciprocate. By drawing the experience away from the screen and into tangible actions, it is possible to maintain stronger bonds to distant people or places through interaction within these actions.
While we dream of a network that connects us all, social and cultural barriers are reproduced online. People tend to stay in their familiar neighborhoods, even when consuming through the safety of their screens. Our goal is to create work that takes downs these exiting walls, and presents its viewers with a new perception for a diversity of cultural perspectives.
What is your Center Mundi? Do you have one in your vicinity? What do you do in your center of the world: geographically, spiritually, professionally, privately - those questions prevail.
The artists are asked to share the knowledge of that significant place for them, and with that their work to be included in the project. The main goal of their participation will be to answer the specific questionnaire about their own artistic development and their eventual ever more expanding use of the digital art tools in their practice, if it is applicable.
For each place there will be one collective meeting. Communication will be based on mutual exchange of experiences (personal, professional and collective). We will converse about history, present and future of places they reside and create in, each of them with both - specific and mutual values. In that way this project will illuminate cultural diversity within different places, but also it is expected that it will underline some similarities.
The project website /in development/ will serve as a publication and documentation platform at the same time. Through that dynamic platform, the participants will be continually involved in the project.
The data from the records collected from participating artists will serve as feed for algorhytms which will visually describe the outcome of the travels in the form of web application as a secondary, but nevertheless significant visible end product. The application will be written in Processing. The main goal of data visualization in this project is to communicate information clearly and effectively through graphical means.
