The Empty Cans project is a music and video workshop destined to teenagers from 12 to 16 years old.
It is about working with groups of 12 to 16 persons over five days, on building a collective multimedia work that they perform at the end.
Empty Cans is based on a software of the same name designed for this project. It’s a computer application that runs music and video in a synchronized way, and that is controlled by Play Station joysticks.

The Empty Cans workshop

The Empty Cans project is a music and video workshop destined to teenagers from 12 to 16 years old.
It is about working with groups of 12 to 16 persons over five days, on building a collective multimedia work that they perform at the end.
Empty Cans is based on a software of the same name designed for this project. It’s a computer application that runs music and video in a synchronized way, and that is controlled by Play Station joysticks.

Tarek Atoui first initiated the project in 2005 in France with the Puce Muse studios, then carried out the idea to Lebanon when he got the support of Chris Keulemans and the Art in War festival of the City of Utrecht (NL) to give this workshop to teenagers of several Palestinian refugee camps in 2006.

In 2007, Empty Cans took place in partnership with the Today’s Art Festival at the Hague and got the support of the European Cultural Foundation, the Cosmopolis program, the Steim studios and the Scopitone festival among others. The project was held in Hollande, France, Lebanon and Egypt between June and September 2007, and from each country, 3 teenagers got invited to the Hague a week before the Today’s Art festival and worked on a collective performance that they gave for the opening of the festival on the 20th of September.
