Spoonfeeding Performance for Armenian Dreaming

2008

ARMENIA DREAMING is a project by artists of the Dutch Art Institute, Partizan Public and artists of Yerevan.
During our stay in Yerevan I asked Armenians two questions: who they declare as representatives of their society and who they wish as representatives.
Out of my perception there I chose six people in function of their work to feed the public by spoon and to nourish people with their thoughts, opinions and food.

    The performance starts -

A business woman, an art critic, a journalist, a politician, a priest and a mini bus driver fed the public by spoon.

The performance was realized at the School of Fine Arts of the Mkhitar Sebastatsi Educational Complex on the last day of our stay. The Complex is situated in a district of Yerevan which is far away from the center and was therefore named Bangladesh. The six Armenian people who I invited to come as protagonists of the performance did not find the location. This fact talks already about the urban seclusion of the neighbourhood and evoked some nervous reactions before the performance began.

The public consisted of an in art interested and engaged crowd and this presumption influenced my choice for people who fed the public by spoon.
During the ten days before, with a lot of help of all the Armenian artists of the Armenia Dreaming Project, I got to know a priest, business persons, politicians, journalists, veterans of Karabagh, art critics and mini bus drivers. I was curious to meet them and to hear more about their lives and concerns.
They served as a mirror of social structures which I detected as important during this short stay in Armenia. Dream and reality were for me mixed up in Spoonfeeding, because I intended to create a dialogue between the trenched part of social layers. I think that I achieved my objective, because the public started to interact and to question the feeders. Sometimes people felt betrayed when they put more emphasize on the food than on the feeder, but this was also a part of the risk of participation.
