A late night impression of the Nightshift / Extraschicht
Every year for one night the whole Ruhr area (Germany's former industrial heart of cole mining and cole processing ) is changed into one fairy-tale like cultural happening. 40 different stages, linked by shuttle services bring you from one hot-spot to the other. The former heavy industry sites are transformed into cultural spaces, where light- and soundeffects mixed with high quality artistic performances take you on an unforgettable night-shift.
On Saturday morning I headed to the Ruhrgebiet to enjoy the “Extraschicht”. www.extraschicht.de/
The Extraschicht is an annual one night event were all the industrial culture heritage sites of the Ruhrgebiet are “on stage”: music, performances, light installations, theatre etc…
The poetic tension between these massive “sculptures” from heavy coal and iron industry legacy and the often subtle light and sound effects is very special. Especially when Petrus is taking good care of the perfect summer night blue-isch shades in the sky!
I definitely recommend this special experience to you!
We decided to head to Dinslaken to the Zeche Lohberg (www.extraschicht.de/index.php?id=307 ) were we forgot time and space in the impressive “Kohlenmischhalle” that was transformed by Theater Anu and Theater Magica into a labyrinth of 3500 candles, taking you on Die grosse Reise, the “life-journey”.
In one word: amazing. In the labyrinth you encountered 6 performances by great actors and mimes, staging different aspects and reflections of la condition humaine in the most subtle and poetic way.
The setting, the quality and content of the performances, the very special light / shade effects in the industrial architecture and the music touched everybody present when wandering around in this light-labyrinth.
