1. Concept
Our first performance was 19 of June, in Berlin – Schaubude Berlin. Before that we worked hard on our concept of this performance. It takes 5 month. We changed concept several times to make it more simple and interesting.
In the beginning , we wanted to build large space full of objects, which would be a materialized interpretation of internet. But last concept we get, was concept of virtual body.
In many religions and mythologies human has few extra bodies besides his physical body: soul, astral body, ether body, dream body etc.
Mythologies said that we could use this bodies for astral travel, to meet gods and angels. To traveling in to the dreams. Furthermore we discovered that this immaterial mythological bodies was expressed in different paintings, in different culture. So we decided to make a research about the history of humans extra bodies. In this view, we imagined the evolution of this extra bodies in the contemporary era. That’s how we get the main concept of our performance.
Around 30 years ago when internet was made, collection of our extra bodies was increased with new super body which we called – virtual body.
We imagine that All this social networks, forums, chats, blogs are building blocks of virtual body. It has many faces (avatars). It has many eyes and names. The more and more networks you join the body becomes bigger. When you’re online your virtual body is alive. When you’re offline the body is slipping.
Our biggest interest was the oldest Indian painting of astral body. We discussed a lot about how interesting is to express the immaterial substation with colors and shapes. Also we found parallels between mythological bodies and our virtual body concept. Both are immaterial, can travel and contact with another similar bodies and we can develop this body and it can exist independently.
So we decide to act like the old Indian painter and express this new digital, electronic body with non electronic, non digital materials by performance.
2. Rehearsal
The main rehearsal period took place in Berlin. At the beginning the rhythm of Berlin was very fast in comparison with quiet Tbilisi. That little bit shocked us. That’s why our rehearsal period also was the period of intensive adaptation, plus it was our first interrelation with theatre. In the beginning it was really difficult to train to the new style of working. But the organization Laurence Barbasetti and collective of Schaubude theater helped us with good suggestions and dependence.
For us it was fresh, new experience to work on the stage of the theater. To redesign the space, working with lights and theater technical personal (really nice people).
We made the stage with papers, local magazines and cables.
3. performance
Ana was represented the virtual body, she was standing in the center of the stage and was connected to whole stage with different colored cables. Zura was the real person-internet user, who grows and develops his virtual body. In the process of the performance he was hanging papers with different internet symbols and inscriptions on the cables. This action was simple material representation of virtual body building. Specially for this performance Zura made 15 minute long music, it included the musical performance too. Witch was not planned by us before and Zura made it during the rehearsals inspired by Berlin. Before it Ana made special gifts in envelops, which was given to the public as a surprise. Also performance was interactive cos’ Zura made imitation of internet chat and talked with the public.
The Theater has mutual public and our performance was unusual for Theater atmosphere, but the public gets it very positively.
After Berlin we replayed the same performance in Poland, Bialystok. There was the stage and public different, so the process of the performance was changed in real time, our Poland performance was more aggressive and energetic. Because of public was more and younger.
4.
This trip was great experience, we sow different performances in Schaubude, by Spanish and Byelorussian artists. Contacted with different artists, in Poland we acquaintance the people from art group ‘company doomsday” and theatrical students. We shared many ideas with them. Also we got new skills to adapt with unusual situations.
