The 5th Floor movement started in 2001 with five students from the Landscape Painting Department of the Academy of Arts located in Gyumri, the second largest city in the Republic of Armenia. In 2006, the first meeting of our members took place. Furthermore, we started working on the mission statement of the 5th Floor. Hence, the year 2006 became the official year of the establishment of this informal cultural group.
The 5th Floor movement has brought together individuals and artists who were concerned with the non-harmonic issues of art that were similar to the ones present during the Soviet times. Discussions, workshops, exhibitions, and performances are being organized and held at the Art Center of the 5th Floor. The Art Center is located on a 5th floor. This is only one of the reasons for the name of the movement. Additionally, the 5th Floor had its conceptual supporters in 1990s and was named after the 3rd Floor movement.
The 5th Floor cultural group has successfully attracted the attention of similar organizations from abroad. There will be artist exchange programs during which the 5th Floor will be the host organization of these programs in Gyumri. Projects in the context of contemporary art are being organized with great enthusiasm in the South Caucuses region. I, along with my artist colleagues, see a bright future for the 5th Floor movement.
