Sarah Kunkler
Sarah Kunkler was born in South-Eastern Ohio, where she studied printmaking and photography at Ohio University. In 2005, she moved to the Czech Republic to teach English, where she is currently living and working as an artist.
Since moving to Prague, Sarah has had 2 exhibitions at Muddum Gallery, the first being prints made in Ohio, and the second an installation about human movement in a public space. This second exhibition, ‘Where all Lines Converge’, came from the concepts formed during a collaboration about transportation in Prague and New York City, which was exhibited at a MAPC printmaking conference in Athens Ohio, in 2006.
Currently, Sarah is working on a photography-based project about ‘paneláky’. This project explores these domestic spaces from their exterior, and questions their structure and the materials from which they are made.
Later this autumn, she will be an artist in residence at Arts and Cultural Studies Laboratory in Armenia. During this time, she’ll work to find patterns between the systems of language- (phonology, grammar, speech, reading, and writing) and create a visual language, or story, based on this. This project will examine common elements in these foundations of language, and also in the way we learn language as well. By then creating art, which relies on our visual abilities, a universal language, these common linguistic elements become something that unites experiences from people of all cultural backgrounds.
Since Armenian is such a unique language linguistically, it’s perfect for such a project. The goal is not to compare Armenian to other languages, but to create images, based on the experience of learning Armenian that discuss the process of learning, and reflect the common foundations in all languages. The mediums of printmaking, drawing, photography, and installation will be used.
