I'm a multidisciplinary artist, but over the last few years I have been working mainly in the field of video art, anyway I don’t want to use this as a label to define myself. I believe the most important thing being an artist is to have freedom of thinking and to have a courage to express your ideas. To provoke people to see how their own world is changing in front of their own eyes because of the influence of the diversity of nowadays cultures. For me, art is a form of communication with other people and the artist has in his/ her hands the art as tool, in which the opportunity to provoke and change the thinking of the others is hidden. In the same time, I believe there is art, pure art, which artists make for their own spiritual development as well as to find out the divine essence in their selves. This understanding of art is a way of life and a way of thinking with no commercial value.

Art is my way to be free.

Mehmet Dere is a young artist, living in Izmir. His practice is

primarily focused on public interventions and gestures about cultural,
political and social conditions of Turkey. He is living in a
district of Izmir called Gurcesme, where can be briefly described as a
ghetto, because the majority of the inhabitants consists of immigrants
from the east. Therefore his works has a lot to do about his
neighborhood, on identity strategies, sub-culture of the ghetto and
social-political conditions. He produces stencils and site-specific
installations which provoke ideas of both cultural and political
notions. He plays with popular and sub-cultural imagery to point out
the manipulative nature of the system.

Laundry is an association with a core of 10 artists, with additional affiliates. Our members and affiliates both maintain their individual freelance practices and come together under the umbrella of Laundry to develop and deliver collaborative projects.

Our members and affiliates both maintain their individual freelance practices and come together under the umbrella of Laundry to develop and deliver collaborative projects. Members utilise a wide range of artistic practices and methodologies - photography and film, visual arts, oral history, performance, writing and digital media - working creatively in community contexts and with a diversity of cultures. To do this we engage in partnerships with groups in both the voluntary and statutory sector, in UK and elsewhere.

As an artist group we are interested to:

• explore the nature of collaborative work, and how we utilise different styles of participatory practice, engaging with audiences and communities

• provide a supportive environment to collaborate and experiment, seeking opportunities to developing artistic practice through shared knowledge and experience; through skills exchange, mentoring and practical actions

• develop international partnerships which are of benefit to our locality.

In his audiovisual productions Pieter Geenen questions the landscape as a bearer of meaning. He is interested in the suggestive and evocative qualities of the landscape, and geo-political and geo-social realities in particular. How does man relate to the landscape? How do we shape landscape, what traces do we leave, and what do we experience in confrontation with a landscape? In his work the image manifests itself slowly, exploring the subtle and hidden characteristics of things. Listening and watching becomes intense, intimate, alienative, contemplative and almost tangible in the context of an undisturbed stillness.

His work has been presented among others at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (NL), Argos Centre for Art and Media (Brussels, BE), MuHKA_media (Antwerp, BE), Courtisane Festival (Ghent, BE), Stadsgalerij (Heerlen, NL), New York Film Festival (US), Art Rotterdam (NL), All Art Now International Video Art Festival (Damascus, SY), Images Festival (Toronto, CA), EMAF (Osnabrück, DE), Media City Festival (Windsor, CA), Synoptic Visionaudial Art Meeting (Pécs, HU), Onion City Festival (Chicago, US), Crosstalk Festival (Budapest, HU), VAD Festival (Girona, ES), TIME Festival (Ghent, BE), Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin/Madrid, and at the Venice Biennial 2009 (IT) and the Liège Biennial 2010 (BE).

My work is a continuing examination of personal and cultural histories, and the implications of the past upon the present. The paintings, video, sound and installation work are investigations of time passing; of what we gather, what we leave behind and how this ultimately defines us as people and as a culture. It’s about time and it’s unfolding and overwhelming nature. And it’s about our lives and how we move through time and traverse landscapes.

I look for tremendous beauty in simple things.
